Heather Seaman is self-taught at pine needle basketry and has been coiling them for over 20 years. A graduate of UNC Asheville, Heather graduated with a BA in Art in 1996, concentrating in Ceramics. After a few years, she realized that a passion for nature was leading her toward more natural materials.
The pine needles used are from the Longleaf tree (pinus palustris), which is a native tree to the Southeastern US, along with being North Carolina’s state tree.
In addition to Carolina Mountain Artists Guild, Heather teaches pine needle basketry classes locally and is also a member of the Dogwood Crafters in Dillsboro, NC, and the Village of Yesteryear, which is a guild of heritage artisans that demonstrates during the NC State Fair in Raleigh every year.
